Chemical Composition (%)

Alloy 617 tube is a solid-solution, strengthened, nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy, engineered for extreme environments where high temperature, pressure, and corrosion converge. The high nickel and chromium contents make the alloy resistant to a variety of both reducing and oxidizing media. The aluminum, in conjunction with the chromium, provides oxidation resistance at high temperatures. Solid-solution strengthening is imparted by the cobalt and molybdenum.

Mechanical Property

Inconel alloy 617 tube has high mechanical properties over a broad range of temperatures. Alloy 617 has good hot formability, but it requires relatively high forces because of its inherent strength at elevated temperatures. In general, the hot-forming characteristics of inconel 617 are similar to those of inconel alloy 625. The temperature range for heavy forming or forging is 1850 to 2200°F (1010 to 1205°C). Light working can be done at temperatures down to 1700°F (925°C). Inconel alloy 617 is readily cold formed by conventional procedures although its work-hardening rate, is high. For best results, the alloy should be cold formed in the fine-grain condition, and frequent intermediate anneals should be used. Annealing for cold forming should be done at 1900°F (1040°C).

Main Features

  • High-temperature Strength: Inconel 617, also known as n06617 nickel alloy, the high-temperature strength of which is anchored in its advanced solid-solution strengthening, primarily imparted by cobalt and molybdenum. These elements create significant lattice strain within the austenitic matrix, effectively hindering dislocation movement and thereby providing exceptional resistance to creep and stress rupture at temperatures above 1000OC. Complementing this, the stable nickel-chromium matrix ensures long-term microstructural integrity by preventing the formation of embrittling phases.

  • Oxidation Resistance: The oxidation resistance of inconel 617 tubing is achieved through the synergistic effect of chromium and aluminum. Chromium forms a primary, protective chromia (Cr2O3) scale on the surface, acting as the main barrier against oxygen. The key addition of aluminum creates a secondary, subsurface layer of alumina (A2O₃). This inner alumina layer is more stable at extreme temperatures, significantly improving the scale's adhesion during thermal cycling and drastically slowing the overall oxidation rate, thereby providing reliable protection up to approximately 1150°C.

  • Carburization Resistance: Carburization resistance in alloy 617, also known as inconel 2.4663 is primarily attributed to its dual defense mechanism. Its high nickel content (~55%) intrinsically reduces the solubility and diffusivity of carbon within the austenitic lattice, creating a kinetic barrier. Concurrently, its sufficient chromium level enables the formation of a stable, protective surface oxide that acts as a physical barrier against carbon ingress. This synergy effectively prevents internal chromium carbide formation, preserving the alloy's ductility and structural integrity in high-carbon environments like petrochemical furnaces.

Common Surface

As a leading inconel 617 tube suppliers in China, Ronsco is re committed to meeting the diverse needs of our customers, including surface treatments such as Acid Pickling (AP), Mechanical Polishing (MP), Bright Annealed (BA), and Electropolished (EP). These treatments enhance the surface quality and performance of the tubes, making them suitable for various demanding applications.

Application Areas

Inconel 617 tubes and pipes is a critical material for extreme environments, finding its primary application in industries where high temperature, pressure, and corrosion converge. Its exceptional combination of creep strength, oxidation resistance, and microstructural stability up to approximately 1150°C makes it indispensable for advanced power generation systems. Furthermore, its outstanding resistance to carburization and nitridization secures its role in high-temperature chemical and petrochemical processing equipment. In aerospace, it is utilized in high-stress, hot-section engine parts.
